A quiet Blat in France

Nigel and I were so taken by Le Blat that we talked about heading back there for a quieter more low key day. In truth the cost was so reasonable it was rude not to. With Tony B and Bryan accompanying us we headed off…………

we managed 180 miles over there, arriving a little before 11 and leaving at 8.30. A bargain day out for the cost of the ferry.
We did 4 stages, a coffee at Desvres, Lunch at Berck a seaside Town below Le Touquet ( where the Moules proved a popular choice ) – where we we encountered the French equivalent of ‘ i’ve been looking after your car Mr ‘……yep, we were blagged by a 70 year old French guy that professed to be the guardian of a bit of grass outside some flats where we’d parked. Frankly it was worth a few euros to shut him up.

The afternoon took us to Wimereux for a refreshment stop – but parking hassles meant we meandered on to Wissant where a beer in the superb sunshine was on the cards. Due to a bit of a mix up ( we’d decided to change the last leg as we had time to burn ) Nigel and I despite frantic waving watched Tony and Bryan sail past a turning – by some quirk of fate we bumped into them both 20 minutes later, the only regret was that they’d missed yet another cracking road that we happened upon. A few more decent roads later we pulled up in central Calais for a photo in front of the Town Hall.

as before the cars stirred up interest wherever we were: people working on their gardens downed tools to smile and wave, kids ran to the street to grin and wave as we sailed past and once parked up there were calls for pics of the cars – i think we have potentially 4 kit car owners for the 2020’s – after they had their pics taken in the cars. ( all treated with respect).

for the small outlay of the ferry i really would recommend a days driving in France, yes you’ll come across a few roads that are no better than the UK or possibly not suited to hard riding kits, but in the main you’ll find some lovely smooth tarmac, some fantastic sweeping and twisty roads that open out before you and moreover a great welcome from the locals. If you don’t fancy covering so many miles – don’t ( although frankly it wasn’t a trial as each section was only 40 miles or so ) – just pick your destinations and linger a while in some lovely little Towns.

Le Blat Deux a Group event which is listed in Group Runs is happening in Sept and for those wavering – come and join us.
