We had a new to Fun Cup third driver for the Oulton Park Island Race on the 13th April. So we arrived on Thursday and met Andy Tate at the circuit only to find that we had met at Anglesey last year.
We did arrive very early to try and get some extra practice sessions but to no avail and so had 3x 40 minutes of Fun Cup practice to get the car and Andy and I up to speed. The car was oversteering a lot. Great fun but not very quick. It was oversteering into, and on exit so getting the power down was a struggle. We took the tow from the back and ran them parallel and took some preload off and soften the back end. It made it better but still it was under steering.
I just concentrate on me and leave Ian Payne to dial the car in for two reasons. Firstly I think the crew do not need three driver’s withdiffering ideas confusing the issue. I give them my feed back and then stay out of it. Second if I concentrate on my driving that can make a bigger difference than the car setup.
The issue with practice is that half the grid decided to get in the gravel or barriers! This meant that the red flag was out for long periods. Andy had not driven the car so needed more time in the car so Ian and I got about 12 laps each.
Then the v-box would not play back so not a very good Friday.

Re: Oulton Park Island - Fun Cup
OK, OK
I spoke to few other competitors and most of them were running the back end very soft and no preload. So we changed the car and lowered the back and raised the front a touch.
Then the draw for the start. We were drawn on the second from last row. Well we could not go any further back! LOL!
I drubbed the new tyres at the start of qualifying and did 5 laps and the car felt a good deal better. Handed over to Andy and then Ian.
I was disappointed with a 1.45 as Ian was in the 1.43s and Andy was struggling a little further back. I had found 2 seconds from Friday but was still getting the Island hairpin very wrong but was strong through Cascades and now was straight of the power from coming off the brakes at Druids although Over braking for that and Old Hall.
I needed to improve for the race!
Ian started in P24 and after the first lap was up into 14, what a star. Team Uvio started last on the grid and had followed Ian through the pack. The racing was very close and after Ian stint he came in P9.
Next me and the car will not start so it gets a bump but it means I go out in 18 place but still on the lead lap. Really enjoyed my stint although we had a safety car but it gave me an opportunity to get back up to 12 before loosing a couple of places and then the Safety Car came our and I was tail end Charlie. That meant that when the pit lane opened for the pit stops everyone came in at the same time and we were in a traffic jam. Lost sometime before Andy got in.
I was fairly happy with my times as they were consistent and I had a few 1.44s. I got in after Andy and we had fallen back a bit. I got up to P18 but a lap down. Andy was struggling a little and so handed over to Ian with a lightfuel load. Ian then got some luck as he just got past the pits as the safety car came out. So he made a whole lap and the cars in front where just ahead he played his hand and was up to P14 by the end.
We had a very enjoyable w/e and the car worked very well in the race despite being rammed going round Old Hall!
Next out is Croft!
Now for the pictures
