Near miss and then big one yesterday!

Postby Crunchie Gears » Sun May 19, 2019 7:01 am

Hmmm...

Had a torrid day yesterday :(

First session the steering in the Fun Cup did not feel right and then worked sometimes and then went vague. It then stopped working altogether  :o

I came off and managed to get it stopped before the barriers.

The crew got on it and found that the steering column had sheared. They got the car off the track removed the steering power steering and replaced it with a solid column.

The physically on the limit driving it without Power assistance. So my next session I am struggling and having to short shift so I change before the steering lock goes on. So not feeling very comfortable in the car. :?

The safety car come out and bunched up the cars. On the restart maybe lap 2 I get a bit off line round the fastest bend, Barcroft, doing over 100 mph, and get tagged at the back. I then get on the wet track and am off. Got the car turned to go into the barriers backwards.

In the medical centre for about 40 minutes. Got cleared for racing certificate. Bit stiff but drove home.

I feel alright this morning. The car isn’t   That said it did the job.

Oh, and my wife watched it on live streaming and did not panic. She saw me getting out of the car myself. That said I could not shut the door after I got out.

Glad you’re ok Paul. Steerage seems to be a bit of an ongoing issue... is there a dodgem car series you could enter, where it doesn’t matter so much? :D

Cheers Mike

To be honest this is the third time I have had steering issues. There is only so many times you can be lucky. I will do the two Zandvoort races and then decide if I change racing series. Not a good time to make decisions.

Not a good day mate. Glad the car did the right thing and let you walk away!

How bad is the damage?

Looking at it in slow motion going in backwards was the best way lucky the back came round as it did . Be it the car is fooked as long as your ok that all that matters.

As others have said Paul, all that matters is that you are ok. The car can be repaired with a few modifications it sounds like.

Thanks all.

The only driving skill I had all day was to flick the car so I went in backwards :D :D Felling a bit of ache today but OK. Taking it easy.

How are you feeling mentally? Just annoyed or a bit shaken?

Philosophical to be honest. I made some poor decisions which is annoying:

1. I carried on driving the car as the steering column gradually failed completely, not very clever.
2. I got back in the car with no power steering knowing I would struggle to drive the car. It is very heavy and that is why we fitted power steering.

But the off is not an issue. Racing accident got tagged, went off.
