Thanks for taking the time to document the process, the blades look really good now, can't imagine how good they look when polished

Edit to say I've just had a look at the website, some amazing pieces there esp the kukri
Yes I've been drinking, what of it!!

I've just been discussing that with my wife. I think I will use wood, but I'm not sure if I should use the same wood on both knives or different.

I had a rummage in my wardrobe and found:
Maple (too plain, byt nice to work)
Yew (poisonous so maybe not)
Bocote (Mexican rosewood)
Zebrano
Honduras walnut
American black walnut
And a couple of antler tips

Choices...choices....

Time for an update, sorry for the delay, but I got sidetracked making mirror mounts :D

After a lot of elbow grease, I have polished both blades. It is always tricky photographing highly polished steel as you get everything in the room, the camera and the photographer relected in the blade  . The best way I have found is to take the photos outside:

P1020669.JPG

They certainly aren't perfect, if you look closely there are some slight flaws in the steel, but overall I am happy with the way they are progressing. The obvious notch in the edge of the upper knife in the top photo will be removed when I sharpen them. Obviously, sharpening before the handles are made makes life rather dangerous :o

I'll be getting on with making the handles in the next few days.

Stunning work Duncan, the imperfections add to the character and patina. A superb gift they will be delighted with.
