Fantastic place, brilliant road system, the old roads wiggle round the central mountans, the new ones bore straight through them, the whole place was clean & well looked after, with rubbish bins everywhere emptied every day, public loos common & clean. The madeirans seem to keep things properly maintained, I didn't see more than three dents in cars all week, no broken pavements & nothing stopped them building - especially not a mere mountain. I saw several places with a car parked out the front with a drive off the road & another car parked on the roof with a drive off the same road at the back. Talking of cars I saw:-
several ancient, but straight & shiny Land Rovers
four classic Minis – one a race modded one
a Fiat 124 two seat sports job
two 1930s four seat tourers
a 1060s Rolls Royce
an Austin Healy 3000
a TR2
an early ‘70s Merc 250 & the more swoopy previous model
several Fiat 500s including an Arbath
a rally prepped Peugeot 504
an XK120
two beach buggys
two Mokes
a Legier
a 55 Buick 88 – though that was in a beer garden as an attraction

All in superb condition, compare & contrast France where I was a week before, where the pavements were broken & covered in dog turds, loos were filthy & rather too “public” & the only interesting cars I saw all week were a DS on the motorway & a Panhard at the ferry port.
