Wiring looms

Postby martin butler » Fri Feb 05, 2016 1:13 pm

Whats your experience been of the verious availible wiring looms to fit kit cars,?
i made my own when i rebuilt my car, mostly because i took one look at the 30 year old escort wiring loom and dumped it, and made my own using 7 core, that i stripped and made a coded loom to suit my car
I have decided to take this one step further and will be setting up manufactoring perpose built basic looms to suit any 7 type car, i have settled on a modular system, with separate front, rear and middle looms, joined by multi plugs, all to a common colour code, so for instance if the side lights are coded as white, any wire in the loom will be white from supply from fuse to the light fittings, a pre wired 8,0r 14 block fuse ,with 2 relays for headlights, and flaishers/ hazards, again all pre wired on both supply and fused sides, complete with full easy to understand instructions, with fuer layout, wire colours,
the front loom will have a split plug and split into 2 sub looms, that allow you to best run the wiring down either side rail, to suit your engine, ie if crossflow, the horn, ignition, washer pump oil sender will be looomed to the right side, light fittings, so you get a loom designed to fit your car, all you have to do is to fit it, i could even pre wire the light conectors, as long as i know what you need.
this will be a low volume set up as im working from home, so should be able to offer competative qoutes
this is based on how i wired my own car, but then, i didnt have the profesional tools, where as now i will have professional crimpers, but the colour coded approach made wiring my car an easy job,
So if anyone is thinking of wiring their car, do look at what i can offer, , i have worked in electronics previous , making engine looms for Bae, so i think i can match the quality of most commercially availble looms.

price would be around the £100-120 mark depending on the amount of wire needed, what i would need is for you to once you are ready to send me the dimensions of your car so that all breaakous can be in the right place, in effect all looms would be made to order, based on what you would send me and what side of the engine verious senders are if you need them in the loom. the idea is, that you measure your car, you know what needs to be where, i then make the loom using my system based on your instructions, because of the way i have designed it, i just move the multi plugs to suit the lenght needed, and route the wires to suit your layout i am working on a form that i can email to an interested customer that they fill in, then return .

I've bought a couple of looms, one when I re-wired the Rickman, the other for the Fury, in the case of the supplier I used they made four standard looms, Escort based front engine, Escort based rear engine, Sierra based front & rear engine. The Escort or Sierra based bit was because of the stalk switch fittings & as you have said, the front, rear & dash sections were on multi plugs. That was important to me on the Fury as the rear loom went in before the chassis was panelled, all the other bits stayed in the box 'til much later.

The only real gripe I had with the ones I used was that the instructions consisted of a list of functions with the wire colours, I would've much preferred a wiring diagram, done mech engineer style, front lights at top right & left, rear lights at bottom right & left, everything else in more or less it's right place in between.

Be aware though that there are complications, like early Sierras have the hooter switched live, late ones are switched earth & there were a couple of similar things noted on the instructions I used. I'm not enough of a leccy to know if that's important from your point of view, but I could copy the instructions if it's any help.

One last thing I'd say is re-wiring the Rickman was one of the best things I did to it, didn't take long (a couple of weekends) & it sorted out SO many problems & made the car much easier to work on, so I'd recommend re-wiring to anyone who's floundering with a colourful birds nest  .
