Sounds good to me

Those in favour of Tony's plan above

1.graham..Yes please
2. Brian
3. Steve
4.Matt
5. Bob
6. Linda (I think, what have I let myself in for)
7.
8.

So you've made me look at a map, this is not a good thing. I have learned that Bute seems to still be in the UK, I was concerned it was in the continent (as per Steve's request) as the only places you go to on ferries are foreign. Like the Isle of Wight. I was also further concerned by the recent trauma of finding out where the Isle of Man actually is. All islands should be off the bottom of England - like aforementioned IoW. Nope, it's nearly in Ireland. That explains a lot. See what you've done?

We met a couple on a motor home tour and asked them where there favourite place was and without hesitation both husband and wife said " The Isle of Harris". It's a ferry journey from Uig in the north of Skye - for Linda's benefit that's another stunning island although now has a bridge to get to it. Google images of Harris and you'll see why they chose this as their favourite place. Well worth the effort to get to it if time and finances permit.

It's a fantastic idea, but a quick look at the logistics suggests going Uig - Tarbert will be £36 & Stornoway to Ullapool (to avoid back-tracking & Ullapool is where we would need to be for the next bit) would be £60, the shorter ferry would eat at least two hours & the longer one three. It would also change the character of the trip as we'd have to be at certain places at certain times & I'm guessing we'd need to carry more spare wheels & stuff as the AA won't be arriving 1/2 hour after a call. Then there's the other matter - the people of Harris invented tweed, a warm fabric, near waterproof & too thick for midges to bite through, for a reason :D .

Having said all the negative stuff, I could still be quite keen to do it.

So - Scottish Referendum 2:-
a/ Mostly mainland with ferries to get to the remoter bits, north coast & a couple of nights in Selkirk.
b/ The full island-hopping experience.

If the answer's b/ I'm only promising to look further into it, it still may not be possible without skewing the whole trip to accommodate it :D .

I think you're probably right. Much as I'd really like to do some of the outlying islands, maybe a loose train of eight unsuitable cars is just asking for trouble.

.....then I thought - fuel stop every 100 miles? I'm sure if we wanted red diesel there'd be no problem, but I'm not sure BP or Shell would be so easy.

A) sounds like the best option. Bit of island in, but reducing the risk of 'what could posibly go wrong' incidents. I had even worked out the Harris Tweed thing :D Does it protect from Swan bites? Dave had one bite his stomach at the weekend. It''s left a bill shaped mark, not good
