SKCC 2023 mini tour

Postby locost220 » Sat Jul 01, 2023 3:26 pm

This first report will be uploaded a few bits at a time to save me loosing all the work so consider it completed once i say it is

So a short while ago a few of us decided to go on a SKCC mini tour, that being a homage to the early tours we did 2011 - 2014 uk based before some decided to go to the Europe and some to stay in the Uk for various reason.
These were originally based on a 4/5 night stays at different hotels, the start being at Lakeside Thurrock in Essex and end point being Stoneleigh kit car show for those who liked shows or homeward bound for the rest, so these being in May around the bank holiday.
Captain Mark Greenwood now based further North had a go at messing with the routes he had for 2011/12, but based on a 3 day ( 2 night ) window to visit some of the keys areas / roads, making suitable itn. routes to be used on various Tom Tom models as used on Sunday breckie runs and other events.
We decided to use some pre-booked leave for a three day mini tour including stays at Scarborough and Holmfirth, both being previous locations, with the riders being
Mark in his MX5, Duncan in his Caterham, Chris in his MK1 Elise and me in my Robin Hood and the start point would be a cafe / garden centre on Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.
Few discussions took place the week before hand and i was to travel up to kings lynn to see my parents a few days before the start before going to the start point on the day. unfortunately i had issue with the kit car enroute so had to get it taken back home and return to kings lynn in my road car instead, followed by a few discussions on me riding shotgun for the trip (sorted )
So after a few day rest with the parents i travelled to Chatteris arriving early as usual and once i had the tin top parked securely for a few days waited a short while for the other three cars to join me for breakfast, once that was done and tom tom and two way radios were shared out, my bag stored in a boot and me in Mark's car we headed off following the routes as planned on the tomtom, we encounted a few bits of traffic and aftermath of a RTA, but the radios come into use at these stages discussing best options, along the 200 mile route for the day we encounter some lovely weather, took in the sounds and sights of what i am led to believe were typhons taking off and landing at the base at Congingsby as the traffic is stopped on the road alongside, stop off at another garden centre at Horncastle for a cuppa before going over then under for some pics of the Humber bridge, we did manage to find a few single lane tracks but what would a road trip be without a few, took a break at Thornton le dale where Bangers and Cash is filmed for a few more pics before pushing on through Pickering and some great roads with views to match, after applying the 'fill up before you park up' rule we arrive at Scarborough and some car jiggling by the contractors working in the hotel to let us park off the road at the Central Hotel, wash and brush up and a stroll down to the harbour and some tucca but left it too late for ice cream but did manage some goes in the arcade.

A good nights kip and breakfast up the road before getting locked and loaded for the second day with me squeezed into the Caterham as i have never really experienced a ride in one on a road. Well it is certainly cosy and not somewhere to have a falling out with your buddy, Holmfirth was the destination after another drive past Bangers and Cash across moorlands and darker skies we did get a little damp so Duncan deployed the tomtom waterproofing ( freezer bag and bulldog clip), various towns came and went till we happen upon tea ( and cake stop ) after a couple hours. I think the others were laughing too much to get their cameras out as i struggled to prize my backside out the passengers seat. After a pot of tea and carrot cake for me i decide to try to get some dignity back and get back in the mx5 for the rest of the day as the roof on the Elise looked a challenge for me as well.
We found some challenging and surprising hump back bridges where we did not quite get some air towards the lunch stop by the viaduct at Carnforth- ingleton after some pic opportunities. Plenty of wildlife, rivers and reservoirs to be seen as we made our way under grey skies towards, luckily the sheep seem to be pretty happy with the activity and rarely stop eating the scenery as you pass.
We picked our way into Holmfirth ( where last of the summer wine was filmed ) to the same hotel that the club stayed at last time ( i failed to make it this far last time ), again parked up in front of the hotel and relaxed for a while before finding our rooms and then going out for a local curry.
Breakfast in the hotel as we start the third day, today i get a chance to sample the passengers seat of the Elise as we head out under murky skies, giving me the first chance to gaze in ore at Chris's home brew Tom tom holder :D
A planned stop at the dam at Hope Valley - Ronksley, where the dam busters trained, then through Casleton and Peak Forest, through Sheffield, Bakewell, little longstone to grab a tea and cake stop. Prior to this we had lost contact with Duncan as his tomtom was twinned to traffic and had taken a diversion unseen, so we used one of the watts app features to see exactly where he had stopped so we could make sure we did not pass him unseen. once we got back together we managed to squeeze in a pit stop at pub/canal stop near Derby.
We had planned to say our good byes at Rutland water but as Duncan had a fair way to go he departed after a joint top up, myself, Chris and Mark made it there for a last cuppa before we all went the last few miles back to Chatteris where my car was parked up.
Few handshakes and sorting out of bits and bobs before we part ways after what has been a very enjoyable few days away and more memories made.

it is always a challenge getting fair to good weather on trips particularly in this country, company is always a pleasure, the extra dimension of extended days and evenings add to the experience.
As i said earlier the main group split a few years ago and the rogues runners do 2/3 UK trips a year as well as others that venture to Europe.
would encourage others to try a small trip or few days away to make the most of the countries and company you can.

Nice one Rich, sorry, been snowed under after those few days away - so much for being semi-retired!

It was as ever, a complete hoot - and made the more so when thinking about some of the 'events' and characters of those early trips. Clearly am going to have to interrogate Richard, as seems that cake is the 'new thing' at the mid morning stops; Haven't seen you chowing down on the equivalent in France :-)

Was somewhat surprised that the average MPG on the mx5 went up during those days, note to self - must try (drive) harder. I love and loathe this country, the scenery in places is epic, its just a pity that the weather makes a mockery of plans, and as for the state of some of the roads.....

Must have done 10% of them in the middle of the road or completely on the wrong side to avoid camber and pothole issues. I think i'd have lost a few fillings if i'd been in the old Tiger!

As ever, the banter at the stops and in the evenings was the icing on top of a good days driving.....if you ever go for a curry with Duncan, ask him about Cosmo and his remedy for 'post curry ring comfort' ( in fact, just ask him to regale you with stories of all his nutty med school pals). Quality banter!

Ten years ago, I went on my first and last official SKCC road trip. I was a revelation, great company of course and very well organised, but I couldn’t believe how great the roads were. Previously, I had driven all around England, Scotland and Wales, but using a road atlas. I soon realised that many of the UKs finest roads aren’t shown on an atlas. Every time we came across traffic, we turned off down some dodgy looking back lane only to find ourselves on an amazing moorland road with only sheep and bemused hikers for company.

I was inspired, so when Mark took the SKCC trips abroad in search of better weather and more dramatic views, I found myself joining some other members and organising the first of many Rogue Runners unofficial SKCC tours.

When Mark said he planned a last minute mini tour this summer, I couldn’t resist although the official start was three hours from my home in Eastbourne……

Last Monday morning I was up early and left the house at 4.45am, an hour later I met Chris at junction 3 on the M25 in his beautiful Mk1 Lotus Elise. We then suffered two hours driving alongside lorries on the motorways until we reached the top of the M11, I was very pleased to be back on more Seven friendly roads!

At Chatteris we met Mark and Richard at a cafe for a very pleasant breakfast and the banter was soon flowing. Mark was wearing T shirt and shorts and asked why I was wearing SKCC jacket, fleece and long trousers, I pointed out that even in the summer it isn’t that warm at 4.45. Richard left his trusty Honda at the cafe and we headed off with him in Mark’s MX5 which fortunately had a decent boot as Richard had quite a large bag.

We headed up the east coast towards Lincolnshire, the roads are fun but very bumpy, strange as the landscape appears dead flat at first glance. We had to stop for two Tornados to land at RAF Coningsby, as we were at the front of the queue we had a private display.

A coffee stop at a garden centre was followed by crossing the Humber bridge, we stopped to admire the bridge and take some photos.

North of the Humber the roads got better and better, we looked for another stop but being Monday most places were closed, in the end we stopped at Thornton the Dale a lovely village where apparently they make the Bangers and Cash TV show, unfortunately, I had never seen the show, but it would appear lots of people do and it is a place of pilgrimage.

After more great roads we finished the route trying out a little hill climb circuit right in the centre of Scarborough, great fun. After beers we had a nice italian meal on the front and a quick trip into an arcade just before they shut. Back at the hotel, the others were up for more beer, but I was shattered so went to bed.

The weather forecast wasn’t good for the Tuesday and whenever we went onto moors we were generally in the cloud, however, I didn’t have to put the roof up (apart from paking at coffee) or put a waterproof on, so it can’t have been that bad.

The roads were great, but we missed out on the views. We found a great coffee and cake stop near Thirsk after the fantastic roads over the North York Moors, then headed to Tan Hill pub which is ridiculously remote and very busy. The roads of the Dales are always good and we had a great lunch in the pub by the Ribblehead Viaduct before heading on to Holmfirth. The amazing roads in this area become rat runs in the rush hour, so we stopped for another coffee to let things calm down a bit. Arriving at the hotel around 7 meant we couldn’t eat there so we headed to the curry house. Mark had had curry three days straight before the trip and ordered the hottest curry, he has the constitution of an ox!

The Holmfirth hotel did an excellent breakfast, and the weather was better so we had a good start. First stop was at the dam where the Dambusters practiced their low flying, they were very brave, the lake is surrounded by trees and not very long at all!

Mark’s route in the Peak District and the Derbyshire Dales was great, but my modern TomTom took me up the wrong road, because it knew the correct road was closed. I ended up ahead of the others and then cocked up by inadvertently deleting the lunch stop waypoint. I stopped for coffee and Bakewell tart later and Richard did a great job using Whatsapp and Google maps to find me and ensure we got back together. The rest of the route was uneventful, we had a nice drink by a canal and then I said goodbye at a petrol stop near Rutland Water as I still had a long way to go. I’d planned a much nicer route home, but the ETA was 10.25pm  , so it was A1, M11 and M25 again and I arrived home at 7.45.

A great trip, thanks for organising Mark, and thanks for the great company and hilarious banter Richard and Chris.

quality write up Duncan :D :D

The only bummer with those kind of trips is that taking a 2D photo just doesn't do the vistas justice.
And yep, that hill climb circuit was great fun 'Olivers Mount', it was temtping to have doubled back and 'done it' again!

Thanks all for the write ups, great reading and a great trip. Don’t think it would be quite the same done in a Yeti!
