Athens or bust 2018

Postby Rob E » Wed Oct 04, 2017 4:10 pm

We have a plan, a few of us have been talking about doing a rust to Rome type trip but ended up with this as the kits are more fun and logistics make it very hard for what we had in mind , so the general idea is to drive down to Venice , catch a ferry to Greece and then drive back up through Albania ,Montenegro,Bosnia,Croatia,Slovenia and on to some twisty mountain passes , the trips expected to take up to 14 days leaving in June but were still planning routes and looking at options

So, more details;

There are two options being explored, we are looking to see if we can use a transporter like we did a few years ago to get the cars all the way down to Athens and then we fly out to meet them, however after speaking to a few transporter firms a couple of months ago I doubt that will work.

So, the plan at the moment is to leave on a Monday and get to Venice by Tuesday evening (surprisingly easy!) - then catch the car ferry that leaves at 12pm on the Wednesday that arrives in Patros on the Thursday at 9pm - the cost up to this point is the most expensive - Eurotunnel about £100, tolls about £60, Fuel about £150 and ferry about £200 ish - so about £500 ish - if we could get the transporter for about 700 - 800 per car then this will be a better option and saves us 4 days!

Once we arrive in Patros we work our way back up the countries that Rob mentioned, we average between 200 to 250 miles a day and camping (in a tent) is a must to keep the costs down (its up to £100 cheaper per night compared to a hotel) - if its raining we try and book those log cabin type things and share

Ill try and find interesting places to stop at on the way back up. plenty of historical sites (although I cant find any where we can drive right up to), plenty of picturesque harbours and loads of dodgy women that want to come back and marry us!

Ive dusted off my spreadsheet, I think we need to budget at least £2k, if Kenton forces into hotels I reckon itll be closer to £3k

We tend to be in bed by 11ish, and we tend to be on the road by 8 to 8.30 each morning, we run a kitty and stop at supermarkets for "diy" lunches which work really well, plenty of coffee stops and normally a restaurant in the evenings

and above all, plenty of banter and p1ss take, honestly, youll come back feeling the effects of group man love... :lol:

Romania and the transfagarasan pass is this years road trip destination, surprised it’s not on the list. A mate did it earlier in the year. They caught a train from Germany with a car transporter. Will be catching up with him beginning of November so can find out a few more details if you think it might be an option.

Oooo sweepstake, I love a swweepstake, but why only two choices? To make it fair for more to enter, how about how far will you get?

Seriously though, sounds like a great adventure.
