LEDs do not have enough resistance to excite the alternator. You need to change this for a normal lamp or add a resistor in the circuit to give it some load.

Bad earth suggestion is very credible, it would allow the alternator output to drift too high and that would excite a normal lamp. You might also not be getting the full charge current to the battery that you should be.... but that wouldn't show itself for a bit.
If LED, then that too would explain it. I had the same problem; the solution is a 100 ohm resistor in parallel with the lamp/LED.
