I would guess but thats just me. I'd rather pay for a larger steel that someone to work out the min required.
Go for what looks right, then get the next size up. 245, 135 35kg ?

Thats the farmer coming out in you Kenton, but im probaly of the same opinion but thought i would get some sound advice first!!

I did some calcs 90x90x5 box section which indicated that they would be sufficient, ( checked on google to see if i had formulae remembered right) so was thinking of 127x76 rsj would be ok.

The back of my house is held up buy a 185 X 135 steel just done a job for a customer and there's is 350 X 215 not sure of the thickness, mine spans 4 metres there's spans 9 metres both are bungalows, so your 90 box section sound rather inadequate but I'm not an engineer

but mine is only holding 400kg whereas yours is holding up a couple of tonnes of roof plus snow plus wind loading. So think im pretty much in the ball park then. I will be going to steel fabrication place tomorrow where I get my off cuts for things and will report back,

The design team I work in includes a structural engineer. I can't promise results but I'll see if he can take a quick look in the next few days. Not sure how much difference it will make, but what is the approx wheel base of the car and is the weight evenly spread, i.e. 125kg a corner?

Hi tony.
Thanks. The wheel base is 2m and weights are 120 each rear corner and 80 each front corner.
best case woukd be The rear 700mm from one end but worst case would be load at 1 m from either end

Hi
Have been advised to use 100x100x6 for added safety margin due to th elikly hood that i will put extra things on/in car for storage.

Be interested in your input still though Tony.

Thanks

Not looked into that option. But now you have me thinking! The house has suspended floors, maybe I should transfer my lounge to the garage and my garage to the lounge :)

Anyone got an excavator I can borrow? :)
