Fuel sender was a silly error on my part. Fibre washer on a mounting bolt was insulating the ring terminal that was on there as the ground!
After the re-wire had a spare switch position on the dash put in an interior light switch and connected up to an adhedive strip of waterproof LEDs. Should now be able to consult the map at night in the back of beyond.
