Gentle Reminder

Postby leegav » Sun Aug 05, 2018 8:21 pm

Hi guys. Had a bit of an accident in the car today on the m4 on the way back from my parents bbq.
80 mph in the fast lane the rear passenger wing decided it wanted to go under my wheel and fly out the back and hurl down the motorway in bits... Big bits may i add..
Basically the rear wing came loose at the front and the air pushed it onto the wheel which in turn ripped the rest of the screws out and smashed it against the exhaust as it catapulted under the wheel...so now i have a missing wing and a big effing dent in my simpson exhaust...
I assumed these had been bolted on with washers but oh no..... The college put self tapping screws in.... Wtf
So im 150 quid lighter and coukd have caused a serious accident in the fast lane...

Moral of the story check your rear wings...and if they wobble abit when you polish the car (like mine did yesterday) dont forget to check they are fully secure... And drive with 2 hands on the wheel!!! Had i been chilling with my left hand slightly resting on the steering wheel it would have pulled the car to the right....Hard! Luckily i had hold a firm hold with both hands at that point... :o

Shame its happened, but it has, and your ok

My rear wings are bolted, 6mm bolts and penny washers on both sides

could you turn the exhaust 180% to hide the dent ? or is the tail pipe fixed

steve

Self tappers - into fibreglass??

One decision I made very early in the build of my car - NO self tappers.

You don't seem too impressed with the work the college did Lee.

Sorry to hear that, must have been a very nasty surprise :(

I think it will be possible to get rid of the dent in the silencer. It looks like the rear cap is the end that removes for repacking- if so, I would get some rigid slightly curved steel sticking out of a strong vise (an old leaf spring would be ideal). Then with someone helping you could slide the spring in beside the packing and the top of the can and use a smooth faced hammer to reshape the silencer.

I have 5mm plastic bolts and nuts with large washers holding on my rear wings. The bolt should break in an accident limiting the damage to the body, and they also don't corrode so removal is easier in the future.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape, glad you're OK. The rear wings on my R6 were held on with self tapping screws, but they were large ones with a 10mm hex head, don't recall what they screwed into, may have been the chassis or aluminium panels. They were pretty secure.

Jeez mate, glad you are alright. I reckon someone with the right skills should be able to push that dent out in the silencer?
