R888R asymmetrical tread

Postby leegav » Fri Aug 31, 2018 2:46 pm

Is it just me or have others who are using r888r noticed that tread patterns are not the same.
What i mean is that the direction of the tread grooves is different around the car, but there are no directional markers on these tyres just outside inside.
From what ive googled its perfectly fine, but i just cant get my head around how one side will surely throw water away from the centre but the other will throw it into the centre.
Look at the photo;
On the side with 43 from the centre line outwards the groove is rising, on the other side of the car the groove is falling.
Can someone else with more brains than me conform this is perfectly fine????
:shock: :?: :roll:

Hi Lee
Yes thats the way they are. The side wall is marked "outside" and you cant get a left and right pair if you see what i mean.

How does the water treads work then...i would have assumed the first patch to touch the tarmac would pick up water and send it throigh the tread outwards... On the drivers side it wpuld do the opposite surely???

Have to say Lee, I agree with your logic, and even my 539's look different from the front, but both like yours have a deeper wider groove nearer the outside rim, so perhaps this is the all important part ?

Also, on a "normal car" you would never see the tyre like we do, so I doubt 99.999999999999% of the world have no idea there different
Thats was probably spelt wrong, or had some grammer, that the "grammer police have to have a moan at

I noticed this when I fitted my new Rain Expert 3 tyres. There is an explanation on the uniroyal website:

The water flow on the tyre’s footprint
Is it right that the grooves on one side of the car point upwards and on the other side downwards?

Yes. The long, steep grooves on the outer shoulder of the tyres are designed to direct as much water as possible to the outside via the shortest way and therefore in shortest possible time. The RainSport 3 and RainExpert 3 are designed in such a way that the water can be drained in the direction of the shoulder, to the outside, as well as in direction of the deep circumference grooves. The angle in which they run has no impact on the aquaplaning performance and the driving comfort of the tyre. So it’s completely ok, and doesn’t change anything with the overall performance of the tyre, if the tread pattern seems to have a different orientation on either side of the car.

The deep groove is for line stability and steering response. From what ive read its not actually the outside edge that rids the water anyway its the inside...but still. They are not symetrical around the car..
