Tintop Troubles

Postby Fury1630 » Sun Nov 11, 2018 11:31 am

The ancient ('02 1.8 petrol) Zafira's engine light keeps coming on. I start it up & it goes out, after 2 - 3 minutes it comes on. It's also very jerky & lacks power when it's cold.

I started it on the drive with the OBD plugged in & there's no error codes, it ran up to temperature just fine with all the sensors reading as expected & the light stayed off - BUT, If I gently gently squeeze on the throttle nothing much happens, then it suddenly runs up to 2,200rpm, release it even a little & the engine returns to idle. This ties in with something else I've noticed, roll up to a junction & the engine will sit at 2k+ rpm until the car stops, then the revs fall to idle.

As the car's throttle-by-wire, I suspect the rheostat in the throttle pedal. Anyone got any better ideas?

Finally got it to spit out a fault code - P1555 - which means "throttle position / load implausible". I like that, it's as if the ECU is saying to the sensors "yes, I hear what you're saying, but - REALLY??"

A little internetting suggested cleaning out the throttle body, which I sort of did & it seems much better, I took it for an "Italian tune up" & the light's stayed out, so I might take the TB off & clean it properly.
