So ive received my private number plate certificate of entitlement and im confused as to what to do next. I can assign it to an unregistered vehicle but you still need to provide a v5c, registration number and validation number. surely an unregistered vehicle wont have those things will it?

My advice would be to wait until you get the new car registered with any old plate and then transfer afterwards. You'll have a lot less hassle.

I believe you have to pay about £15 a year to keep the private plate on retention, so watch out if that becomes due as you might lose it if you don't pay.

What I am told is register it. Put the private plate on and do the transfer at the same time. Road tax should follow! That said check but that is what my Morgan friends do.

That said I sent my person number to Zenos. ( God it took something to type that) and they did it.

Yes what duncan says is the easiest way, when you buy a plate these days or even take one off a car the retention period lasts for 10 years as opposed to 1 year that you have to keep renewing.

When it comes to assigning it to the vehicle you can do it all online which automatically swaps over the tax and mot but don't forget to change the insurance. You can put the plate on immediately and they'll send you an up to date V5 so a lot quicker than the old system.

Seems strange that its more difficult to assign a plate to a car with no plates than it is to swap over. Bloody dvla.

I'm sure it must get an age related plate (68) first. You always get this back if ever you remove the personalised plate.
