Anyone got any experience/ opinion about something like this for undertaking oil changes; https://pelaproducts.eu/pela-650/ PIA getting to drain plugs with undertrays, so I get a garage to change the oil on our four cars, none particularly new or valuable.
Thanks

Re: Oil Change
I bought one Tony and do the Volvo with it. The oil filter is at the top of the engine as well so it’s so much easier. If the undertray has to come off for the filter, it sort of negates the advantage other than the potential mess it saves.
Word of caution the pipe needs to go straight down through the dipstick into the sump. If the hole is ‘open sided’ internally, there’s a chance the pipe could veer off and get caught up. Seen it happen first hand with a Mini which then needed the sump removed to free up the pipe.

Re: Oil Change
I have heard of these, and they are no doubt convenient, but I think all the biggest heaviest particles and sludge falls to the bottom of the sump. For that reason, I think it is best to remove the plug, so gravity will bring out as much of the muck as possible.
Of course, if you don't plan to keep the car for long then don't worry

Hi Colin, I guess it depends if you like lying on cold ground undoing multiple self tappers to get the bl##dy thing off

Re: Oil Change
Thanks for all your replies, on balance if I can get to the filters without removing the tray I'm tempted to give one a try. Not convinced the garages don't use them anyway....If I park the cars on our sloping drive so the dipstick hole is one the low side hopefully it will suck out most of the oil and any other cr#p too.

Fair point but for me i would be laying on the floor and doing it the hard way. I think Duncan has a point on his post.

Re: Oil Change
In theory the oil filter should pick up the detritus. If the engine is that sludged up it probably needs a rebuild.

Re: Oil Change
I've got the same one, but the Machine Mart air powered one. Works great, but one of my previous cars would not permit the vacuum tube down the dipstick pipe.
I always empty via the sump on the Tiger, but on the previous daily Volvos I did most via the vacuum, with just the odd sump plug out and never found any build up. As oil changes came around every 6 months made it very convenient to change oil in less time than a half a return trip to the garage. I'm convinced many garages do it this way as I've found the sump plug rusted in place midway through the car's life - either that or oil change was never done!
Not sure the new Volvo even has a dipstick tube. I've not seen one yet anyway.
