Polo rad into a striker

Postby Hammy » Sat Dec 03, 2016 2:36 pm

Just bought a Polo rad to replace the Escort one in my striker. Has anyone got any pics of how they fitted it to the Striker/Phoenix etc mounts. Doesn't seem to be much on the rad to work with as mountings

When I fitted one to my Caterham, I tapped threads into the small plastic bosses on the rear of the radiator and made alloy plates to bolt to rubber bobbins. I think that is how Westfield do it too.

I posted a thread on it here:http://southernkitcars.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8165&hilit=Winter+downgrade

Ditto, M6 tap from memory, though don't screw it in too far!

I did exactly the same, and used araldite on the threads, one to lock the thread to the plastic mount, and secondly to avoid any leaks

Yes, I've found they loosened, despite spring washers as I didn't want to tighten them too much. I've just drilled the bolt heads and lock wired them, so it doesn't happen next year :)

Fury Sportscars use a particular type of self tapper for this which don't come loose, if you speak to them they'll tell you what to use.

Self tapers may be an option, as Jeff says, but I would be pretty careful of screwing one into the hole on the rad, as self tapers are pointed, hence could puncture the inner core of the rad

The holes in the rad, (i believe) are already tapped to 6mm, and accept a 6 mm bolt quite easily, and as such bolts are blunt,

There are options that aren't pointy like the tri-lobed thread formers...

I used stainless self tappers on the Fury - I blunted them with a file first though. I'll measure one tomorrow & post a picture of the mounts I made.
