Exhaust silencer

Postby Matth93 » Sun Jul 16, 2017 11:25 am

With Castle Combe coming up next weekend I thought I'd try and check the noise from my car, using a app on my phone (how accurate I don't know) but it came out at 108db. I know the exhaust is loud anyway so can quite believe it.
So I am looking to replace the silencer for a better repackable one my question is where is the best place to get one?

think CBS do them? May be worth thinking about a 7 inch can as you may then have a bit more headroom for noise tests....

Oh dear - looks like I'll be failing the noise test then

CBS sell them, or some folks have cut the end off, put a strip of steel round the cut end & sleeved / riveted the end back on with new wadding.

I don't think you'll have much of a problem tony I'm sure your car is quieter than mine. My current silencer is a Westfield one with a cat built in so the actual silencer isn't very big.

Yes, but you've got me worried now. I wonder if I could just rotate the tail pipes so they point forward under the diff?

I've also just calibrated the tacho, it was reading 2000 at an ECU stated 2500, so to get to an indicated 4500 for the noise measuring, I'd have had to rev it to 5100. Yes I di think if setting it the other way, but thought they might notice.

My tacho reads slightly higher than it actually is doing, as when I fitted the zetec it wouldn't read right till I found a bit on the back of the tacho (standard sierra clocks) which adjusted it so I set it to read a little higher (only about 200) than the laptop was reading off the ecu as I thought it may help with trackday noise readings :D

One way of doing Matt, they'll probably get you on the drive bys unless your exhaust is on the wrong side with a bit of luck.

In my experience they don't look at tacho just use ear and they are pretty accurate!
