Tin Top Insurance - young 'uns

Postby greenwoo » Wed Jul 26, 2017 7:47 am

has anyone recently insured a car for offspring / young'uns?
If so any bright ideas as disappeared up my wazzoo on various comparison sites....short story, quote for Admiral multi car jumped by 50%, naturally spat my dummy out and have got that 'down' to only a 20% increase

Decided to see what happens if we split the policy back to 2 sep ones, and my daughters premium again seems to be around 50% more via the comparison sites.....around £640 for a 5 yrs old Fiesta with 6 yrs no claims.

Jees! My daughter pays £350 - £400 for fully comp with four years experience & a write off to her name.

Some of the problem will be the car. Lots of kids have Corsas & Fiestas, therefore lots of kids have crashes in Corsas & Fiestas. My daughter has a pug 107 (lowest insurance group there is) but it's always worth phoning around. When she first got a car we got an on-line quote of £997, bought the car, went back to book the insurance online & it was £1200, "that can't be right" so I went online & it was £1300, called the Co. & it magically went down to £950.

We alternate between Admiral & Direct Line, doing multi-cars with each, which seems to work OK.

One thing that's always been odd. Admiral is cheaper with me & my wife as named drivers on the Pug, Direct Line is more expensive, so that's worth checking.

I don't know if it still works, but I always had my Mother on the insurance on all my cars, the current Mondeo included, and that always reduced the bill by £50 or so,

However, my Mother is 79, Automatic only. (ive never had an auto) and has never driven any of my cars

steve
Thats was probably spelt wrong, or had some grammer, that the "grammer police have to have a moan at

Now there's an interesting legal conundrum, putting her on your insurance reduces the cost, but if she were to crash your car, the insurance would be invalid as she's not entitled to drive your car.

I find insurance confusing. :?

My son is in his 2nd year of driving, Mini One (55 plate) and his fully comp was £400. Black box is the trick.

well unless insurers suddenly don't like us or our postcode i imagine that what i've just been experiencing may well affect others at renewal....
the cheapest standalone quote irrespective of blackbox plus large voluntary excess was north of £660...
and the saab was coming in at over £350.
looks like will have to stay with Admiral multi car, but even after various tweaks that's still risen by 19%
