What’s the saying “quit whilst you’re ahead?” Went out for a last few laps on track and the ‘detonator’ sorry altinator decided to shred itself resulting in.....
.....A bloody great hole in the bonnet and side of the car! Oh yes and the brand new radiator punctured and damage to the pipe work.
Expensive day out.

ah the old....' shall i get a few last laps in' conundrum.
Never seen/heard of one disintegrating like that, wonder what caused it to fail so dramatically.
Bit of T cut needed.......

Jesus Christ, that is one hell of a failure, guess what everyone will be doing tonight, and that hole in the bonnet

It was pristine

crikey, what caused that??? wonder if the pulley was out of alignment??
Whats the plan with the bonnet then?, will a new one match the same colour?

Should have known better than to go for another few laps

. It’s so true. Should have learnt that from biking and trips to A&E!
Yes it’s made a right old mess. Not sure what caused it but as you say quite ‘dramatic’. Just glad it didn’t take off a limb! Looks like it will cost me an arm and a leg though.
Will get the mechanical bits sorted ASAP but might drop a different cam in in the process. (Every cloud).
Then I’ll turn my attention to the body work. Going to be a short term fix for Silverstone. Tony B perhaps the black sticker might grow! Either way it will give me time to think about options. I like it the way it is. But might ‘rebrand’ over the winter. There’s a few bits that need tidying up anyway like the front suspension struts and the metal work near the rear wheels. And the rear body work is crazing.
Better start saving.....

Never seen that happen before!
Did the alternator mounting break or was it loose, allowing the fan to contact something it shouldn't?

Bad luck

Like you say, it's good the bits didn't cause an injury. There was a lot of force to punch a hole in that glass fibre!

I've seen something similar when it's the spool of a jet engine, but never an alternator!
