Fury Winter Upgrades

The Fury's on SORN & the garage roof has been replaced with a waterproof one, so it's time to get on.

The winter's maintenance is mostly to do with the peeling powder coat in the engine bay, so everything's got to come out. While it's all bare I'll be:-
Fitting an alloy bell housing, so my brother can have his Sierra one back.
Getting the Escort flywheel re-drilled for a Pinto clutch & re-working the clutch system in general to reduce pedal effort.
Fitting a geared starter.
Fitting splash guards in the front wheel wells.
Insulating the passenger side from exhaust heat - I've almost done this but the chassis tubes still get quite warm.

On the "possibly" list are:-
Panelling under the engine bay so the car is flat-floored, with a sort of a splitter at the front (well underneath so it can't be seen). The trans tunnel & diff cage is already panelled.
Cutting a boot lid into the rear deck.
Also anything else that occurs to me while it's in bits.

Check the front and rear faces of your new bell housing are square to each other , and have to ask why are you fitting a geared starter or do you have one ready to fit.

I'm guessing by this you're not going to fit the fibreglass inner arches from Fury Sportscars? If so what's your plan?

Will do Dick, I've had trouble with starters ever since the Zetec went in. To begin with it was the old RS2000 bellhousing distorting. with the Sierra bellhousing there were still problems, the starter would occasionally go "Clunk", mostly it wold turn the engine on the second try, sometimes the third. I have two LRS707 (Sierra CVH 1800) starters, both have been rebuilt.

So after all this & then the thing failing to turn at all on the summer meet run I bought a geared starter. It's actually just a Ford starter with the end machined down & an adaptor plate Bolted on. I just thought I'd try something different as I was getting nowhere with the Sierra starters I had.

I have a geared starter, on the xflow, and since fitting it, have NEVER wondered
WILL THE BLOODY ENGINE START !!

It spins the engine over so fast, I can see it on the rev counter

I've heard similar comments from other Marlin owners Steve so I was thinking of doing the same.

Im not saying you don't need one guys it was just a question as to why you are fitting one. They are very good but are not cheap so I was more thinking of the cost. I have a few at work but never fitted as with the sumps that are on mine and jays car it not an easy job to get them in with the infringements of the car as well. That said lots of people run the standard ones with no problems. They are good for hi compression engines or those that like a bit of speed to turn over to aid starting (Steve) . Would I fit one if it was no trouble ? if it could be done at a reasonable price then yes. Note your supply to these starters and the earth along side the battery must be second to none
