Charger build

Postby Rob E » Sat Jan 07, 2017 8:57 am

So I've decided to keep the kit and play around with it by putting a supercharger on it, so thought I'd start a thread following the build, first thing was to order the charger , done  so no going back now, that was the easy bit, I'm currently looking for a recommended rebore specialist?
Let the fun begin.

Clearly I know very little on this subject, there is a plan with a lot of guidance from a very knowledgeable builder, these things aren't too difficult if you get some help from people, it's what the clubs about isn't it ?? Helping out, passing on your pitfalls ?? The do's and dont's.

So I've gone for the rotrex kit, very helpful, not cheap but a good bit of kit, sourced the pistons and rods ( well someone has ;) ) the problem area is the plenum with the back plate adapter but hopefully that's moving on, once the piston and rods are here it's down to dicks to start the build process so waiting very patiently ..........not

Glad you have found an experience builder to help you out.

Just incase the person concerned doesn't think of it here are some pitfalls that you may need to look into.

1. Intercooler, most of the chinese made stuff on ebay is junk and has large pressure drops across them.
2. Injector sizing, you need to size them correctly for the power you are making/looking to make.
3. Inlet, ensure you have some form of trumpet in the GTiR house, 19mm cast ones will just fit if you use a 20mm spacer between the back plate and the plenum.
4. Exhaust, a standard size zetec exhaust is not big enough to get the exhaust gases away from the cylinders.
5. Fuel system needs to have sufficient capacity to cope and should be capable of at least 5 bar of fuel pressure. Use a fixed, 3.5 bar, pressure regulator and ensure each throttle body is connected to the vacuum reservoir that also has feeds for the FPR and blow off valve. Useful to have a boost gauge connected to this as well.
6. Make sure your clutch and pressure plate is rated for the torque you are likely to generate. Most stock zetec clutches/pressure plates/flywheels will not cope.
7. You are likely, unless you are running a uprated Type 9 or another, to blow third gear out of a stockish type 9 Budget for a BGH E8 or equivalent as a minimum.
8. Idler pulley, this will fail so make sure you have this upgraded to a metal bearing one when the work is done.
9. Spark plugs need to be changed to a colder plug.
10. Prop shaft, make sure the joints are the HD ones and the it is in good condition, same with the half-shafts.
11. Make sure you have suitable breathing set up from the crankcase and head. Make sure you have a decent sump and that your water system is good nick.
12. Your diff needs to be a good condition and meshed correctly and you should have some form of LSD or you will have issues putting the power down.
13. Make sure all of your suspension points/mounts and engine mounts are in good condition.

apart from that make sure you have enough dosh for transmission rebuilds, fuel and tyres
