Steve,

Used the dial gauge tonight, sent you a PM to check I'm reading it right

Cheers

Don't know if your using sprite uprights and hubs etc.but if they are the disc should be bolt on.if fault was not there beforehand and you have no movement in bearing ie rock wheel top to bottom. Then how about end float ie push pull on wheel. Check bearing inner race on stub axle for smooth fit. They use to have I think a spacer tube between bearings in hub length 1.5 inch long end float after adjustment should be 0.002 to 0.004 shims go in before outer bearing hope this of some help.

P's would check for end float without pads in.

Thanks, you may have cracked it!

I checked disc run out with Steve's dial gauge, approx 4 thou", which is within tolerance. Trying to lever the hub against the stub axle revealed similar tiny amount of movement on the gauge.....but putting a puller on the hub with the stub axle nut still tight and in place and twisting the centre spindle of the hub puller with hand pressure alone gave 40+ thou", that's over 1mm for those in metric  A tap back with a rubber mallet and the hub returned to its original position and the dial gauge returned back to zero. This can't be good, and depressing the brake pedal afterwards replicated the long pedal travel I’ve been experiencing when driving!! So the First Line bearings I fitted aren’t much good then

I've now got some decent 'face adjusted' bearings to fit, supposedly not requiring shims.

Cheers

Hope you get sorted and out and about soon. Happy to help when I can, and remember how cars use to work.

As minors could potentially view this forum I'll refrain from repeating the language which has just been used in my garage. New bearings fitted, end float seems good, wheel nuts torqued up.........and one of the studs has sheared off  ........the studs can be replaced but only by splitting the hub, which may well knacker the bearings I've just fitted
