Spare Sump?

Postby Fury1630 » Sun Mar 19, 2017 2:27 pm

Bit unlikely I know, but has anyone got a spare Zetec sump? A useable one would be nice but anything will do, at the least I want to take mine off, so just want something to keep the engine's insides clean, at best something I can drive the car with would be wonderful because I wouldn't need to rush the changes I want to make.

A borrow for two to three weeks is all I need.

I have an alloy sump think its from a westfield or dunnel engine ,it has the baffle tray in it. Your well come to have a look and borrow it if you cant find one closer. Its like new just needs a clean up as with most things i have its been on a shelf for a good few weeeks.

Thanks Dick, Mine's OK in most respects, but the oil light comes on (25psi switch) if I accelerate after the car's been sat pointing up-hill at a junction, the sump's baffled, but the pick-up sieve is at the front, so I'd like to modify it to put it in the middle. It shouldn't take long, but really too long to leave the engine's innards exposed.

I have a plan, which will mean the sump's down for so little time I won't need a spare.

The sump currently looks like this:-
Sump 1.jpg

The sump body is shown transparent, & the "Pi" shaped bit is a baffle panel that bolts in from the top.
Obviously the strainer goes in through the large round hole.

Ideally I would move the strainer to the centre bay, but that relies on the new extended pipe being oil tight & at the moment the baffling is very nearly good enough, so why take the risks involved in taking the thing down & re-engineering a load of critical parts, when I only need a 10% improvement?

So, my plan is to make a new baffle in the centre, solid riveted to the sump pan with a couple of these http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/Viton_Oil_Control_Flaps--product--1235.html LUDICOUSLY EXPENSIVE flap valves in, like this:-
Sump 2.jpg

The new baffle would be sealed against the sump pan inside, so the oil can only flow towards the strainer.

As I see it, it can't be any worse. We'll see :?

I have a similar set up on my car. The strainer is in the middle with a baffle containing a trap door at each end

Use a gated sump on the tiger mine are bits of metal with a bit of weight added to them its the old school way tried and tested over many years

I did a google image search this morning & found some clever home made ones, made from door hinges with three of the screw holes welded up to make the flap. But I liked the idea of the Viton flaps, there's nothing to wear or stick. I'll do some more tinkering & see what I come up with. :D

Looks very clever, but won't it add weight

I'll drill some holes in the cast baffle to make up for it.
