An ex-colleague got in touch to say he was booked into the hillclimb school, so for a day out I thought I'd join him. It didn't begin well, I set off a little late into this:-
Then I remembered I'd forgotten my wallet & phone & had to turn round. Because of the rain the traffic was AWFUL, then I couldn't find the place. But the folks there were very accommodating & another two turned up after me, so I wasn't the last.
After a briefing, we walked the hill, with the instructors pointing out where on the track we ought to be at any point. After that (& another dowsing) we formed up into three lines & convoyed the hill behind an instructor twice, then we were let out alone.
I took the first couple of runs quite gently (I thought) then got quicker on the next two, after which we were de-briefed by the instructors & had a nice lunch (with cake). After that we did another four runs with me trying harder each time (I thought).
The other cars were an eclectic mix, from a VW based Seraph, through a load of CateringVans a TR 5, 6 & 8, a couple of MX5s & bizarrely a Panamera, the driver of which got good marks for his racing line, which I thought was a bit off as the thing was so wide there was really only one line he could take.
After all this there was more cake (I like cake) & we were given a certificate with our score & a free pass to a competition day.
The runs aren't timed, but of course with a GoPro .......
So my run times looked like this:
45s 43s 44s 44s 45s 42s 43s - & the last run wasn't recorded by either camera
So in spite of trying harder & feeling like I was going much faster, I wasn't
It was a good day with the Fury feeling properly planted.

Sounds like a good day Tony. Never tried a hillclimb myself, the ones in Scotland are way too scary for me

Well done Tony, I'm tempted by the idea of this, but then my bottle goes
I really ought to give it a go when I have some brave pills to hand, my car has been up there before, but not with me at the wheel.........

It's really not scary because you get taught the line & get the practice. There's no timing so there's no pressure to go faster than you're comfortable with. By the end I was doing 80ish on this 12" wide bendy strip of tarmac.

Re: Gurston Down Hill Climb School
Looks great fun Tony! I hope you're going to get the video up soon.
I went to Gurston with work for a weekend when we were running a car up there.
Of all the single seaters that were running only one guy wasn't lifting for the first corner - big kahunas
I think its a great thing to watch - SKCC trip anyone?

Well done on doing the school, it is sometimes very difficult to understand the times when you have been trying really hard only to go slower.
Gurston is one of the 'kinder' hills and certainly somewhere I intend to try at some point.
