Sump removal

Postby nelmo » Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:15 pm

Matt has been kindly helping me to try get my sump off to investigate a rattle but its a frigging nightmare

Tiger ERA sump on a Zetec blacktop and it turns out that the Tiger windage tray has microns of clearance between itself and the walls of the sump. As I've tried to pull the sump off, the side of the tray has dug into the wall of the sump. Invested in a cheap endoscope and you can see it happening:

That sideways movement is what happens with a lever between sump and block and try levering downwards - looks like the tray is spring loaded!

Any suggestions about how to get it off?

Can you get one of them lever bars in through the breather hole between the sump and tray to force them apart and then lever the sump down? I might be about later and try to get over for another go now we know it's definitely the tray. What time will you be in?

Looking at it another way

Mine doesn't nave a windage tray, can you just force the sump off & bin the twisted remains of the tray once it's down?

That's exactly what I was going to try tonight. I'll be in from 6 if you're free but don't put yourself out - I feel like I'm taking enough of your time as it is...

You'll be happy (?) to hear that the f $#*ing thing is off!

Sadly, i had to drill a hole in the bottom of the sump and then a screwdriver to lever the tray out of the notch in the sump - thing dropped off straight away. Anyone know someone who can weld a hole in an ally sump? :?

Does anyone know who Matt's brother on here is? Matt did tell me but I've forgotten ...
