Lee,

There has been fairly recently a long thread on sat navs and the .itn files that are used for the blats etc. It seems that Tom Tom are thought to be the best units but the modern ones now have limitations. I was a new boy to the tyre thing and bought a recon unit from Tom Tom online. I know for a fact that others have done the same. I bought the XL IQ routes Europe which does everything it says on the box and was cheap (£99.99), in my opinion, for what it does. You can of course go more exotic just depends on how fully you will use all the other functionality.

I recently bought a TomTom One 'New Edition' (i.e. V2) on eBay for £38. It has 'itineraries' in the menu which is what you need for planning routes via TYRE or Google Maps + ITN Converter. Being an older model I've replaced the battery for a fiver off eBay and updated it with the software and maps which I had lying about ;) All-in-all does the job perfectly for not a lot of money. There's loads of these older models knocking about on eBay, it might even be worth taking a punt on some of the "faulty" ones if it sounds like they need a new battery or the software is corrupt.

Lee, if you're going to be using a helmet most of the time worth thinking about getting one with an output, you can then link it into the intercom box: Th eone i have is a very old model, its a 910 ( from memory ), its more bulky than the newers slimline versions, but is ideally suited where i wanted to put it. The beauty is that a/ it wasnt a fortune and if it gets wet/nicked whatever it isnt the end of teh world b/ it has a 20gb hard drive so i can have music on there as opposed to multiple devices c/ it has really good bluetooth and when synched with my phone will read out text messages as they come through and allows for 'hands free' dialing.
If you look for second hand units i'd suggest something more than thge 'one' that Russ sugegsted - IF you might want to use abroad as i dont believe they have european mapping.
Of the older units from memory the older 5 series were uk 7 series EU 9 series eu+states ( obviously i didnt want/need the States but the unit was a good deal and there werent an 7 series around at the time cheap on the bay).
Irrespective of battery - be very aware that with the 2tt's i have neither will hold a charge for longer than about 3 hours ( and thats max) - so you need to make sure you get a 12v point in the car!!!

also. consider where you will fit it. If you can its greta to have them in eyeline, you can just flick your eyes to dble check speed and its handy to see how teh road ahead is paning out - VERY handy to avoid 'moment's when a sudden hairpin looms! Irrespective of that my personal opinion is that many of the supplied mounts are very average, depending where/what angle etc - and you may well find investing in an aftermarket jobbie is useful.

Good place to look for mounts and other accessories is BuyBits.com. I've had stuff from them for several Satnavs now, for kits and road car alike. Fast delivery too. I've got my TT on the dash, mounted so I can see it through my steering wheel - probably not so good if you're a normal height. Mount I use for that is:

http://www.buybits.com/Product/5888/Short-Series-Arm-With-Easyport-For-The-Tomtom-Xxl-Iq-Routes-sku-5888.aspx

I had one similar to fit my old TT, and this was a must by for the new one. It's a suction cup, but with a lever as well. I've never had this configuration come loose, there are plenty of other bits on my car which would fall off first before this would move. Personally, I wouldn't trust a push on only one. Paul's had his genuine TT Easyport one come adrift a few times, so we got him an equivelent from BuyBits, no problems. He has his screen mounted - he's considerably taller  . I'm assuming your new car will be aero, so you might want to check just how much space you've got behind that to fit a mount - and a Satnav come to that. Again, that one I have, I was able to rotate the arm over backwards and put the TT in effectively upside down so that it sits really low, flush with my dash, which was another plus point for that particular one and could be useful behind an aero screen.

For the record my TT One (and other older models) will take any regional maps up to a certain version number. The map version number support depends on the version of the OS software (Navcore) you have on the device, both of which are now fairly recent on my TT :) I have UK & Ireland + France (calm down Tony B) maps on mine. Decided not to go for the full Western Europe map as the performance is slower on older TT's and for 99% of the time I'm using the UK map.

Lee,

I too bought a I bought an XL IQ routes Western Europe reconditioned unit direct from TomTom. It fits nicely with the standard mount supplied with it on the top of the scuttle just to the left of the steering wheel on an R6. Its not completely protected from the elements by the aeroscreen, but a bit of gaffer tape or or a basic waterproof cover (ebay) would put that right in wet weather. Make sure you don't buy the newer XL IQ routes Europe 2, it doesn't accept itn files
