OK you brainy lot a puzzle for you. All my lights work fine except for the following. When I use the flasher the offside one works but the nearside doesn't and when I switch from dipped beam to main beam the nearside dip and main go out. Why oh why oh why? I'd drive the bloody thing off Beachy Head but I'd probably get nicked for no MOT on the way. I have changed the sealed beam unit so it's not that and the earth must be ok 'cause the dipped and side works fine. The switch would appear to be OK because it works for the off-side and the fuses are alright.

so just so that we understand the nearside indicator and n/s main beam are the problems ?

Does the n/s indicator work with the hazard switch ? thats the first to check.

but as both are n/s faults it might be an iffy earth connection. check the hazards and get back to us.

It will be a process of elimination I fear.

Did it ever work? or have you wired it up and it's never worked?

If its just started happening, it does sound like an earth somewhere

If its always been like that, then i'd suggest you check how you have wired it...

The lights have always been temperamental but have always worked. The indicators are fine it's just the nearside main beam .
When I use the headlight flasher the nearside one doesn't work.
If the dipped headlights are swithed on they both work fine until I switch to main beam and then the nearside dipped and main go out.

Hi, you might find that when the main beams are on the dipped lamps turn off (by design). If that's the case then the simple explanation is a broken / loose wire to the nearside main beam connection on the lamp unit.

That sounds logical, I'm off to the garage.
Thanks

Right, you got a damaged/loose cable to the main/flash.

The dipped does go out with main, and flash doesn't turn dipped off.

I was confused thinking you meant indicators as well.

Looking at it from the point of veiw of what MUST be working:-
Generally the switch sends through one wire which splits int two at the fuse box, so if that's the case on your car, then discount everything upstream of the fuse.
You said you've replaced the lamp, is it worth swapping left to right to be certain?
The main & dip share an earth, so that must be OK.
What's left is the wire between the fuse box & the main beam terminal in the lamp. Try a continuity test, & / or run a temporary wire from the fuse box along the outside of the car to the main beam & see if it works then.

Or run a wire from one lamp to the other - I wouldn't recomend running like that as the wire is probably too small to run both, but for short bursts it will eliminate anything within the lamp unit, & confirm the problem as somewhere between fuse & lamp.

Best I can offer.
