James, what the ... are you doing in my thread?

Russ, David, Tony, thanks for the suggestions. I might try the scrap guys first tomorrow, I can do that before work. I'd like to be back on the road again (perhaps briefly, ya never know, right?) before the weekend. Got a big driving day coming up next Tuesday. Or is that a secret?

Ah, that's OK then.

Tony, I basically only need the solenoid. If I cannot find anything, would you consider letting go of the old motor, or just the solenoid?

Went to the Breakers this morning, and got a shiny new (i.e. old and surprisingly clean) starter motor. With four weeks of warranty! Even if you put it in a kit car!

The old starter motor is from a Sierra or Granada. Quite rare ($$$!) and not the same as the normal Zetec one. Tony, the solenoid is completely different, so I won't be able to use it with this motor.

My understanding is that the starter motor needs to match the flywheel & ring gear. So on my Zetec I've got a (lightened) Pinto flywheel & ring gear and so have a Pinto starter.

you need to make sure the bendix disengages from the ring gear otherwise it will destroy the starter. The issue on our cars is normally around the lightened flywheel. So check it out Mattijs
