European breakdown cover for kit cars?

Postby AdamW » Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:45 am

Just tried to get AA cover for a trip the Le Mans Classic next week and the AA no longer covers kit cars (even though I got cover from them for France only a couple of months ago for Le Blat). Any ideas of any other companies I could use?

Adam, i did the last French trip via PO's insurance people, cant recall that they asked much detail about the car....otherwise if you're with the AA/RAC then should be able to get a bolt on policy ( which is what i did for the 1st trip )....

I did a bolt-on with the AA previously, but they won't allow it now. The policy is in my dad's name, so I'll see if it makes any difference if he calls instead...

I hate the AA. Twice they over charged me on my cover, or tried to add extra items. Then said they would refund me and didnt until i complained. Then i asked to have three days of European cover to go to the Ring. They wanted to charge me an extra £70 for 3 days, so i joined the ADAC for a year which covers all of Europe and the Ring for £60.

Rant over

My turn, My turn. Some years ago my wife was in the AA, she drove into a carpark in Autumn & because of all the leaves on the ground couldn't see that the concrete ended, so watched in horror as the front of the car sank into mud & stayed put. She called the AA "If you were broken down in a carpark, or stuck in mud on the road, we could help, but there's nothing we can do for someone stuck in mud in a car park". At the time they were pushing thier single woman priority policy so she explained that she had a 3 year old & a six month old with her, no difference. In the end she had to wait for three hours until I could get to her with the Rickman, a rope round both cars tow-balls, a quick tug & the Escort was free.

We complained in no uncertain terms & got six months free membership - during which time she picked her parents up from Gatwick, pushed on the clutch pedal & it went straight to the floor - call the AA - "you're low priority as you're at the airport, so we can't get to you for five hours". FIVE HOURS AT GATWICK CAR PARK?? It would be cheaper to buy a new car!

Fortunatly it was only the adjuster slipping, her Dad got cross & kicked the clutch pedal & it came back to life!

Joined RAC when they sponsored the British Grand Prix so i could go in their members area and have a posh poo. Last year i broke down four times in different vehicles including the MNR when it decided that an inch of weld on the rear upright was not enough to keep the wheel on and i went backwards down the Uckfield bypass. RAC came out on all occasions within the hour and gave a fantastic service. Have been on both French trips and the infamous German trip and took out RAC European cover luckily i did not have to use it but on reading the small print i don't think you get much for your money.
They seem to want your credit card number before they will help you and then they decide if you or they pay.
