I'm afraid I can only offer negative advice, I bought two "caravan heaters" to do the de-mist for SVA in the Fury - one died between buying it & fitting it, the other worked fine on the bench, but emitted copious smoke from the motor once I'd spent ages fitting it nicely under the dash. I bought a heated screen for the de-mist & manage without a heater. The Ranger has a MkII Escort heater which is barely adequate at the best of times.

Sorry I can only help with the what not to buy, but it's a start.

Thanks T
That's a start.
At least I can eliminate a few, and find out efficiency from others. Most seem to go for the VW polo unit. I have two mk1 mini heaters but didn't want to do all the agro fit only to find something better or more friendly.
anyone else?

I took mine out when I changed to an aero screen. No idea what it's off mind.

I have these in my Tiger, but I've never used them as I run an aero screen now.....

thanks Ross
I have one of these down the garage collecting dust. I bought it and found I could not only pass wind myself faster and hotter, but it then packed up after a short while.
I think in general they and others similar (of which I have a couple) are only meant as a back up until a real heater warms up.

I built my own using the exchange core and blower from a Sierra. It works brilliantly - it gives me directional control between demister and feet and I bought the front out through the Sierra dashboard heater grill which I worked into my dashboard. As an aside, I can also use it to help disperse heat from the engine if I get caught too long in a traffic jam in the summer (my radiator is a tad too small for my engine) but you don't want to do it for long with the hood up!!

Hi,

In my Robin Hood Series 3 I started off with a morris minor / mini one.. the fan was next to useless and then thankfully the the matrix leaked .(thankfully as i think the air flow wouldn't have been enough for sva)

I then bought a polo one , made up a box section out of aluminium and take one hose out from it, which I then split and go up the the two sides of the screen, nothing for the feet. the drivers side gets so hot from the exhaust pipe heat that I don't think i need a heater! can't comment about passenger side, the missus is not so keen to be out in the cold!

The air flow is pretty poor. This I reckon is down to the way the fan wants to work, Ie it wants to shift lots of air, through a large area with little resistance. As i drop it down to a small space and then one small pipe, the the end result is reduced. It might be better with an in line fan pulling the air though. but a good one of these looks like it is about 100quid from cbs.

I would say that the polo unit will provide a good amount of heat, does have a bypass valve built in (if plumbed in appropriately) and if was able to shift the air through a large escape route the fan would be pretty good.

take a look here and the following couple of pics to see what i did if you like.

Heaters.... no thanks, not after someone on locost forum had a pipe burst on the track, got burnt very badly and was a long time recovering.

Had to keep his foot on the brake to stop while being covered in hot water.

Plus its extra weight, if you must have a screen try find a heated one.
