Re: Trip to Compton Abbas airfield Sunday 22nd June
Right, Mark has kindly helped put together a new ITN. Roughly it starts at Buck Barn (around 06:30) for the Easterners and 45 miles further west at Ropley Dean Shell station (around 07:30) for the Westerners. Then we have a choice of between two routes: 70 miles and 100 miles to Compton Abbas airfield. Obviously this is a longer run than usual, but hopefully worth it, with some nice empty roads out in Wiltshire environs and plenty of sunshine (maybe). So I would like to know what the consensus is. Is 100 miles to airfield from second meet point a bit too much and 70 better? There is your return home from the airfield too don't forget.
In summary, here is the overview of the two routes:
Long Route
Start (Easterners) Buck Barn @ 06:15 for 06:30 depart
<45 miles>
Start (Westerners) Ropley Dean on A31 @ 07:15 for 07:30 depart
<100 miles - 2:30 hrs>
Compton Abbas Airfield @ 10:00-ish
Short(er) Route
Start (Easterners) Buck Barn @ 06:15 for 06:30 depart
<45 miles>
Start (Westerners) Ropley Dean on A31 @ 07:15 for 07:30 depart
<70 miles - 1:45 hrs>
Compton Abbas Airfield @ 09:30-ish
Comfort breaks en-route for the longer sections, as required.
Please reply by end of today if any strong preference and we'll finalise from there.
Cheers,

For those that have not been, Compton Abbas airfield is a very nice spot perched atop a big hill, with excellent views and usually some interesting aircraft. The cafe is good quality and the seating area outside is good:

I'll be meeting in Ropley (10 minutes from my parents house - winner!) and would probably prefer the slightly shorter route from there.

I see from Wikipedia:
So I think the run should be titled The Moonraker Blat

The local nickname for Wiltshire natives is "moonrakers." This originated from a story of smugglers who managed to foil the local Excise men...
So I think the run should be titled The Moonraker Blat

I assume both routes go up ZigZag Hill? My vote is for the shorter one if so.

Also, are the easterners coming along the 272 through Petersfield? May well tack on there for some company to the Ropley meet point.

Re: Trip to Compton Abbas airfield Sunday 22nd June
Yes we'll be coming through Petersfield, but cant tell you when Oli - all i know is that we'll be at Ropely for 7.15 and will def be away from there at 7.30 - the route as voted for is the shorter one ( woosies )....so only 68/70 miles from Ropely.....
can anyone that wants the route make my life easy please by dropping an email to [email protected] and will drop you the itn by return......
cheers
Mark
