Re: Thoughts on subaru

When I was running my Porsche 944 Turbo (300BHP and lots of money spent) as a daily driver I decided to buy an Impreza, new, as a DD and sell the Porsche as it was cost '000s to keep on the road (it was 13 years old with lots of miles). The Impreza was a UK Spec 2000 year car in blue with the gold wheels (Colin stylee) and was fine but pretty boring once you get over the party trick of launching from the lights, the interior was dire but it was reliable.

I had both the Porsche and Impreza for a period of time and each morning for my 75mile commute I really wanted to take the 944 (13 years old, 130K miles and cost a fortune to run) rather than my brand new Impreza.

I've had fast Audi (550BHP RS4 and 450BHP S4), the Porsche, a string of Honda VTi, Jags and Range Rovers and the Impreza had the worse interior of all of them, used a lot of fuel but was almost as reliable as the Hondas.

The thing to remember is that the engine isn't particularly powerful in todays terms, the interior is dire (did I mention that?), the 4wd system is good but they don't handle particularly well (tend to wash out the front) and use a lot of fuel. They tend to be reliable if you don't push the tuning, there was a series of STi/P1s which nuked their engines with constant motorway speeds from memory.

It wouldn't be my choice in this day and age.

In your opinion.

Of course, if something can't be expressed in mathematics it is opinion.

Surely there is more to buying a car than mathematics ?
I, will look at a lot more than what BHP it puts out, hence buying a Mondeo Tdci
as for me, it needs to be a tow car, (caravan now sold :) )
I need an estate car for other uses,
I need a good sized boot, for when we go away. (hence estate)
A family car that is fairly cheap to tax and insure, is also a very big consideration, and now on my list,

Subaru's have never been on my list, as they will not fulfil one of the above, but like everything in life now, we have so much choice, its actually difficult to make a decision

But knowing Martin, he will probably end up with a Skoda, as his decision making process, is not very good :)

steve
Thats was probably spelt wrong, or had some grammer, that the "grammer police have to have a moan at

Bottom line it's all about the maths Steve,.. man maths,.. end of, imo, you know I'm right, full stop. etc, etc. :P

TBH a Skoda wouldn't be a bad choice, the Octavia vRS is a nice bit of kit, quite sporty looking with a bit more space than a Golf.
Power.. small nail, fast hammer, Torque.. small nail, big hammer.. I got a big hammer :P

I quite like the look of the Seat Leon Cupra estate (manual box of course). Not sure about reliability but it would be practical and quick.

No modern saloon/hatchback gets near a seven for driving experience. I swapped a Lotus Elan for a Civic type R- the Honda had a great engine/gearbox but was boring unless driven at license losing speeds and even then the steering was dead.
