5 Tips For Effective Car Care

Different people look at their cars in different ways. For some, a car is merely a practical means of transportation, a means of getting from A to B. For others, it is something to be enjoyed and cherished. And for others still, a car is a passion, a collectors item, or a hobby. No matter what category you fall into, however, one thing remains the same: Looking after your vehicle. Regardless of what kind of car you own, or how you use it, there are certain aspects of car care that never change, and all of them can help to extend the life and improve the performance of a vehicle. With that in mind, here are 5 basic car care tips and methods to stay on top of.

1. Stick To An Oil Change Schedule

Over time, many car owners grow somewhat lazy when it comes to oil changes. However, strict schedules for oil changes are recommended for a reason. Neglecting oil changes can lead to rapidly deteriorating engines, and for this reason it’s vital to change oil on a proper schedule. There is perhaps no regular maintenance more significant for preserving a vehicle.

2. Keep Your Insurance Updated

We all know that driving without the proper insurance is illegal. However, it is also a terrible idea with regard to preserving and protecting your vehicle. Crashes and damages can lead to crippling cost without proper coverage from Aviva or another reliable insurer, and for this reason it’s always worth the time to review your policy and make sure you’re covered as thoroughly as you need to be.

3. Apply Basic Repairs Regularly

This is a big of a vague concept, but is nonetheless very important for the sake of preservation. Basic repairs may include anything from installing fresh brake pads, to changing coolant, or checking your tyre tread. Whatever the case, these basic repairs need to be addressed regularly if you hope to avoid gradual (and potentially dangerous) deterioration on your vehicle. A popular misconception is that cars that are used less frequently are likely to be in better mechanical shape – no matter how many miles you drive each year keep a close check on all of your cars consumables.

4. Keep it Clean

Sun, Salt and air pollutants each take their turn in damaging our cars. If you’ve been out driving on gritted roads, take a few moments to hose off or pressure wash the wheel arches and underside of your car, whilst it may taste great on your chips salt is as damaging to your car as it is your arteries. Prolonged exposure to sunlight and pollutants will over time dull even the most shiny of paint jobs, regular cleaning and sealing with a quality wax will help stave off those effects.

5. Drive & Park Defensively

Finally, the best way to look after your car is to drive and park defensively. Driving defensively can be an art in itself, being wary and alert not only to the prevailing conditions, but also to other drivers around you. In addition taking care when not using your car can help avoid ‘silly’ accidents, scuffs and scrapes to your pride and joy: Where possible avoid parking in tight spaces, maybe park a little further away in crowded car parks…
